How Do I Upgrade Mustang GT or V6 Brakes
to Cobra Brakes?
This article will walk you through the basic steps of
upgrading your stock 1994-2004 GT or V6 Brakes to Cobra Brakes. You may also
upgrade to Bullitt, Mach1 or 10th Anniversary Mustang brakes using this
article.
Advantages to upgrading to Cobra Brakes: Cobra brakes
have a larger rotor surface area. They will upgrade your GT to 13 inch front
rotors, and 11.65 inch rear rotors. They will also change your rear rotors
from a sold rotor to a vented rotor. If you have a 94-98 GT or V6 they will
also transform your single piston front caliper to a two-piston front
caliper, increasing braking power.
How To Upgrade to Cobra Calipers and Rotors... Step By
Step -
Step 1 Choose Your Calipers - There are 3 different
designs currently Ford Makes, which are all Cobra brake variants, just with
different paint jobs. You can choose between the original Cobra black
calipers, Bullitt red Calipers (found on Bullitt Mustangs), Mach1 Calipers
(blank design, found on 03-04 Mach1) or the 10th
Anniversary Cobra Red Calipers (found on 10th anniversary Cobra). Either one
of these will work for you.... it is just a preference of design.

Step 2 Buy All Your Hardware - Next step is to buy
all your necessary hardware for installation. You will need either brake
lines or a banjo bolt kit depending on your caliper choice.
Front Caliper Hardware:
For the rear Cobra brakes to mount
on to your GT or V6 you need a series of parts. Luckily Ford packaged all of
these parts together in one convenient kit called the Ford Racing Rear Brake
Bracket Kit. This Kit Includes Caliper Mounting Brackets, Moan Braces, Dust
Shields, Dust Shield Bolts and rear 11.65 inch vented Rotors. Calipers do
not come in this bracket kit, but you will have already chose them in Step
1. Also, your stock brake lines will work fine with this kit, and will not
be needed in the rear.

Step 3 Choose Your Rotors - Next Step is to choose
your rotors. You have a few options here. If you want OEM 13inch Rotors, you
can purchase them as a kit from us. They also include front brake lines, so
you can remove them from Step 2. These rotors are very expensive,
StangSuspension.com suggests using
Brembo OEM replacement front rotors with these kits. With the Brembo
rotors, you will still need the front brake lines from Step 2, since these
rotors do not come with brake lines. You can also purchase high performance
slotted or
drilled rotors, which we also carry from Brembo.
For the Rear, you are already finished, if you decide to go
with plain rotors. The rear Brake Bracket Kit from Step 2 already comes with
rear Rotors. StangSuspension.com only suggests getting additional rotors if
you want
slotted or
drilled rotors in the rear.
